SUMMARY:Nicolò Ferrario
DESCRIPTION:Nicolò Ferrario is the third artist hosted in the RESIDENT PHOTOGRAPHER project (click for more info) aimed at the production of 10 “artist postcards” of our city\, Rivarolo Canavese. \nBio\nNicolò Ferrario (Milan\, 1984). \nAfter completing his studies in aerospace engineering in 2011\, he began studying photography in 2015 at the Italian Institute of Photography (IIF) in Milan\, completing his career in 2018. In 2019 he participated in a focused course at Bottega Immagine in Milan on visual arts and artistic experimentation in photography by Silvia Bigi. Since then\, he has carried out personal projects in the field of visual arts with a particular focus on scientific research: through the use of photography he wants to bring science\, in its most diverse manifestations\, into art\, believing that there are multiple points of contact between the two disciplines. Starting from the observation that our society bases its survival on technology\, he intends to give an alternative interpretation to the apparently aseptic and sterile aspect that gravitates around science. \nThe project: Back to the future \n\n“Education is not an individual matter but\, by its nature\, it is a thing of the community. The Greek concept of paideia indicated\, in its highest meaning\, a pedagogical process whose ultimate goal was the individual’s achievement of an ideal\, a goal to be pursued throughout life Paideia set itself as its goal the interiorization of those universal values which constituted the ethos of the city\, of the territory and whose assimilation constituted the structure of the future life of each subject. \nThe territory is finely intertwined with the actions of its inhabitants. The territory is an incubator\, a place of worship\, a totemic place where the individual businesses that have become universal echoes of its most praiseworthy citizens. Would the actions performed by these men still have happened if they were born elsewhere? How important is education transmitted “from the territory” in the creation of exceptional enterprises? Starting from this reflection I intend to push the observer to reflect on the importance that the cultural and pedagogical humus of each place has in the growth and development of its individuals in order to tend towards the creation\, as it was in the Greek ideal\, of man. universal. I therefore imagined\, through a sort of space-time contraction\, that the deeds carried out by illustrious Rivarolese citizens of the past would relive in the same places that laid the foundations for such enterprises to take place. Through a process of superimposition\, I combined period images and images taken directly in Rivarolo Canavese in order to bring back to their origin the actions that these men and women have carried out during their lifetime. “ \n\nThe postcards\nThe residency\n“As soon as I arrived in Rivarolo I started walking through the streets waiting for the town to speak to me\, to inspire me. I had already recovered some information here and there but to understand a place\, there are no other ways\, you have to live it. I like it\, from time to time\, look at the plaques affixed to the facades of the buildings. Do you know those plaques that read “he lived here …”\, “he was born here …”? I like to go and peek at the life of the people mentioned in those In short\, it is pure curiosity (although I believe that in people’s biographies there is much more than mere events) However\, it often happens that ten minutes later I forgot everything. This time it was different. \nIt all started with the photo taken with a mobile phone on the license plate of a certain Adalberto Mariano posted in via Berone. “Polar Explorer” read the plaque. Wow. Back at the Toesca house\, I began to gather information and then\, sitting in the garden\, I looked up and in my head I saw an airship crossing the blue sky. How nice that would be! From here my research expanded and I came across magnificent characters: from Farina to Verna\, passing through Alerino and Luigi Palma. It seemed to me that the country had finally spoken to me and had done so through its past citizens. I said to myself: all this has happened in such a small country. Rivarolo is a rich country. It is a country steeped in culture\, history\, events\, adventures. From here the modern history of the world has passed. And here he must return. “

SUMMARY:Francesco Capponi
DESCRIPTION:Francesco Capponi is the second artist hosted in the RESIDENT PHOTOGRAPHER project (click for more info) aimed at the production of 10 “artist postcards” of our city\, Rivarolo Canavese. \nBio\nFrancesco Capponi (Perugia\, 1976) lives and works in Perugia. \nHe studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts and since his formative years he has worked through the contamination of various artistic languages\, among which photography assumes great importance\, first of all analogue and experimental. Light is his main research field: Francesco investigates photography in its primitive meaning of “drawing with light” and starting from this assumption he seeks and experiments with new interpretations of the technique trying to keep the dialogue between ancient and contemporary alive and constant . This photographic experimentation also strongly includes the three-dimensionality characteristic of sculpture\, which allows him to transform or use the most varied objects as photographic cameras and to create his own optical devices such as pinhole cameras\, obscure cameras or magic lanterns. The contamination between sculpture and photography allows him to combine the creative medium to the image in a continuous reciprocity between the two elements that interact with each other in a single work. In his more strictly sculptural works\, experimentation sometimes passes through the insertion of kinetic or mechanical elements intended to alter the observer’s approach to the work. By mixing different arts\, using ancient and modern techniques together and unable to remain anchored to the two dimensions\, Francesco tries to create objects out of time that intrigue and touch the dream side hidden in the viewer. \nThe project: Of getting lost and finding\n\n“It is difficult to get lost in Rivarolo Canavese.\nI should have expected it\, after all it is a small town\, crossed by a network of streets that cross in an orderly manner without abrupt or unpredictable overlaps. When I arrive in a new place\, however\, I like to get lost\, wander aimlessly looking around to absorb the atmosphere of the place\, without knowing anything about the place but listening to what those lands want to tell me. I wanted to narrate this sensation with my project\, mix the static images of the architecture on film and create new ones by merging them with the trajectories of my crossing. It is a type of photographic experience that I had already experienced in other cities\, where however the ancient medieval alleys easily placed themselves at my disposal to be transformed and reinterpreted in new and unexpected forms. \nRivarolo no\, he resisted. It remained anchored to its spaces\, its country nobility\, its special being by remaining simple\, its formal order and its little hidden disorders. This city wanted to tell me more\, it wanted me to tell stories and stop and listen to them. The more I looked at the architecture\, the more I perceived the discreet presence of the people who created them\, I felt the sensation that a country is nothing more than the architectural concretion of the thousands of lives that have crossed it over time\, each adding or removing a brick\, planting a tree \, choosing a way to build one’s own home and life: every life has changed the surrounding landscape with its passage. The more I looked at the architecture the more I thought about the people who had lived and transformed them\, I perceived the ghosts of a past time that were projected onto the present. \nWhile stubbornly trying to give shape to the initial idea of my project\, getting lost and mixing images with my pinhole camera\, I came across a tourist sign placed at the entrance to the municipal park surrounding the Malgrà Castle. The sign recounted the deeds of Dante Meaglia known as “Diogenes”\, Partisan to whom the park is dedicated\, and printed a photo of a group of Rivarolese Partisans\, including Dante Meaglia himself. The photo shows them at the end of the war\, posing\, everyone looks into the car happy but in some it is easy to see a background of melancholy in the eyes\, the gaze of those who are celebrating the victory of a war that they never wanted to fight. \nSome have elegant clothes\, while others still wear battle clothes\, in the group there are young people\, old people\, men\, women and even a priest. Looking at the photo I had the feeling of being in front of ordinary people who had unwittingly found themselves living as a hero\, people who would have preferred to continue to lead their simple life – the surveyor like Dante\, the seamstress\, the priest\, the farmer or the entrepreneur – but who instead found themselves fighting to defend their country\, their family\, their life and fighting for their right to be normal. Ordinary people who did not dream of glory or medals but who involuntarily became heroes only to be able to return to being themselves and to defend themselves from those who prevented them. I felt like these people were looking at me and asking me to get them out of that photo. For a while I tried to ignore them but they stayed in my head\, they kept knocking\, until I went along with them. \nI reprinted their images\, cut them out and brought them with me\, from that moment they accompanied me on my wandering through the streets of Rivarolo.\nEvery so often\, when I felt an affinity with a place\, I would place them on the ground in front of my small handcrafted pinhole camera and re-photograph them in the streets that had been theirs too\, in the country they had fought for and loved. Those discreet corners of the city in my photos\, however\, have become enormous compared to those minute subjects\, a world that has grown and changed by the time passed after them\, transformed over the years\, but also the son of the feeling of those simple heroes who now\, in memory\, unfortunately \, they seem to get smaller and smaller. “ \n\nThe postcards\nThe residency

SUMMARY:Virginia Dal Magro
DESCRIPTION:Virginia Dal Magro is the first artist hosted in the RESIDENT PHOTOGRAPHER project (click for more info) aimed at the production of 10 “artist postcards” of our city\, Rivarolo Canavese. \nBio\nVirginia Dal Magro (Milan\, 1994). \nAfter obtaining a bachelor’s degree with honors in Painting and a specialist degree with honors in Art Graphics\, she is currently working as a teaching assistant at the Graphics department of the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. group exhibitions in Italy and abroad including: 4th Global Print\, Douro; 10×10 for\, Galleria Davide Gallo\, Milan; Zureta\, Geidai Academy\, Tokyo; Salad Days\, 12 Star Gallery\, Europe House\, London. In 2018 she was the winner of the Menotrenta prize\, an exhibition at the Fabbrica del Vapore\, Milan; she was second classified at the Morlotti Prize\, Museo della Permanente\, Milan; in 2017 she is the winner of the Brera-Bicocca Prize\, Bicocca University\, Milan.\nIn 2020 she exhibits her personal hers at the Bandera Foundation Can’t find a way there\, try again. \nThe project\nVirginia immediately focused on the Orco\, the stream that runs alongside Rivarolo Canavese. She observes it on Google Maps and wants to reach it\, but she can’t get there in any way: every path seems blocked\, by physical obstacles along the way or by others of an emotional nature. Her artistic reflection of her moves\, therefore\, to the “denied river” and its interrupted paths: she maps them with a tracking app\, photographs and studies them and then reworked them through cyanotype and Gum Print techniques. \nThe postcards\nThe residency

SUMMARY:Oscar I. Contreras Rojas
DESCRIPTION:Oscar Isaias Contreras Rojas (Toluca\, Mexico – 1986) lives and works between Florence and Venice\, where he graduated in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice.\nHe was in residence at Casa Toesca from 1 to 15 October 2019. \nAfter finishing high school\, Oscar left for a trip to Europe\, coming to Venice during the last week of enrollment at the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice: he passes the admission test\, wins a scholarship and starts painting courses. His oil paintings explore the theme of the landscape\, rendered as a suggestion through strong brush strokes.\nIt is nature that predominates in Oscar’s paintings\, suggested by an impetuous and evocative sign\, which recalls Turner’s romantic and tormented landscape\, of which he proposes a personal vision. Oscar inserts figures of indefinite identity\, sometimes elements taken from works by great modern painters\, such as Michelangelo\, Tiziano\, Tintoretto.\nOscar works on several paintings at the same time\, so you can go back to each of them after leaving them\, seeing them again with a cold mind. Its intent is to create a suggestion in those who approach their work\, different for each one based on their own experience and cultural background.\nOscar’s works change shape: found at Casa Toesca of the rolled canvas\, Oscar decides to bring the reflection started on the small squares of cardboard to a large size. The large canvas is still linked to the theme of the landscape and connected to three other minor works made at the same time: the common thread is the sea\, which appears in every painting in hinted strokes. Nature predominated impetuously\, as always. \nBetween Oscar and Casa Toesca\, immersed in a quiet and secluded context in the heart of Rivarolo\, a connection was immediately created: the garden\, full of light and different trees\, was the source of the first suggestions impressed on the artist’s paintings during his residence .

SUMMARY:Cristina Cusani
DESCRIPTION:Cristina Cusani\, in artis residence at Casa Toesca from 15 to 28 September\, is a Neapolitan artist who uses photography as a medium.\nShe told us about her work “Usually I work on the residue\, on the track\, on what remains in the passage of time\, on the stratification and on the memory. In my research I use photography\, which usually has the function of stopping time and keeping the memory\, as a means of overturning the concept of time and investigating the truthfulness of memory. In this case I started from this house\, where I am and where the concept of memory\, the stratification of time\, and the passage of all the artists who resided there are very visible\, thanks to which I can analyse the relationship between perception and memory. So the reality of what happened in the past and the perception of how this past arrives in the present. ” \nAfter graduating in Communication Sciences at La Sapienza University in Rome\, she devoted herself to the study of photography first at the University of the Arts\, London College of Communication in London\, then at the Outside School in Rome and the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples She exhibits in several group exhibitions including the XI Cairo Prize in Milan. In 2012 she attended the Irregular Laboratory\, a two-year master class with Antonio Biasiucci from which the traveling exhibition Epifanie was born\, also exhibited during the XIII edition of the Photography – International Festival of Rome and at the SIFest of Savignano sul Rubicone. In 2015 she was invited to the artist residence BoCs Art where she created two works for the Bocs Art Museum in Cosenza. She is a finalist of important awards such as the Francesco Fabbri Prize for Contemporary Arts and a Work for the Castle and becomes part of collections of contemporary art such as Imago Mundi Art and Dimension Fragile of the Vallicelliana Library in Rome. In 2017 she won the Sidicini Prize for Contemporary Art and in 2018 the Residence Prize at the Bevilacqua la Masa Foundation. \nIn her photographic investigation\, she daily uses experiences as a starting point to analyse the meaning of being human\, starting from a personal analysis that translates into the expression of universal themes. In her works\, fiction and reality meet\, meanings change\, past and present become one. Using poetic and sometimes metaphorical language\, she creates photographs that are readable on several levels and lead the viewer to question themselves\, creating in the viewer a reaction in balance between recognition and alienation. Her artistic career is characterized by a great experimentation with photographic techniques\, but her research wants to go beyond the medium used and for this reason she begins to broaden her artistic horizons by designing site-specific works / installations. \nShe currently lives and works between Naples and Rome.

SUMMARY:Yoon Il Kwon
DESCRIPTION:The artist Yoon Il Kwon was in artist residence at Areacreativa42 in March 2019 on the occasion of his Turin exhibition at CRAG Gallery. \nDuring his residency\, Areacreativa42 organised a lecture with the young curator Giorgio Bena and  the public.  In the same occasion there was a workshop of chalcographic techniques under the supervision of Marco Spampinato during which the artist told the public about the theoretical and practical nature of his work with the techniques of print\, realizing also artist proofs in front of an audience\, illustrating the passages of their work. \n read the exhibition review on Outsiders Webzine \nVestige of seeing: memory value in Yoon Il Kwon’s works\nFrom March 21st to April 27th CRAG Gallery hosts Vestige of Seeing\, solo show of an artist able to tell the beauty of what we have lost without even realizing that we have ever had it. \nsu OUTSIDERS Webzine \n_di Giorgio Bena \nYoon The Kwon is a 29-year-old South Korean artist who\, despite a certain shyness\, with the strength of his work is able to say everything that needs to be said. I met Yoon during the opening of his exhibition\, but I also had the pleasure of conducting a “conversation” with him within a workshop organized by the Areacreativa42 association\, during which I had the opportunity to learn more about the different participants aesthetic and technical aspects of his work. \nYoon is in particular expert in printing techniques\, in which he is specializing at the Royal College of Arts in London\, and the works that make up Vestige of seeing demonstrate all his mastery of this language in its various forms. \nThe works presented are divided into three nuclei that correspond to as many technical and aesthetic approaches\, excellent indicators of the young age of the artist who also give reason for the healthy experimental tension that animates his work\, but which Yoon still manages to convey organically inside of the same thematic research focused on memory and memory as a place for reflective meditation on the past and a key for reading\, interpretation and interaction with the present and the future. \n“Fast paced society” – literally “fast paced society” – is an expression that recurs several times during my conversation with Yoon\, as something that he intends to somehow fight with his work: both in the type with the techniques that uses\, linked to slow and measured work times\, that in the themes he chooses to deal with\, which not only dig into the past but evoke moments of simplicity\, serenity and contemplation\, the artist seems to contrast with seraphic determination a social context that imposes a frantic search for experiences to consume without ever having time to savor the nuances. \nFor example\, in the The Path of Eyes series\, he mixes different supports (in particular by applying glass tesserae on which some negatives are imprinted on a photographic print) to compose mosaics that tell his travels not through the classic “souvenir” images\, but through the simplicity of objects / subjects that acquire value as evidence of significant moments for the individual’s personal history. \nThe works of the series The Movement in the Space\, however\, are traced back to the artist’s childhood memories\, however animated by a reflection that manages to act in the archetypal sphere. These engravings\, the subject of the workshop conducted by the artist\, in fact represent some children intent on playing\, whose movements are rendered through a multi-pass printing process based on the progressive loss of ink of the matrix\, which moving on the sheet at each stage produces a a result that closely resembles Eadweard Muybridge’s photographic studies on the movement\, however embellished by the progressive loss of definition of the form which somehow testifies to the action of time on memory. \nThe archetypal value of this work consists in the fact that the children who populate its engravings are completely anonymous\, and during the workshop several people have seen\, with a certain emotion\, the fragments of their lives in those images so simple and delicate. \nIn this emerges a fundamental aspect of Yoon’s work\, that is the declared will to evoke the memories of others with his works\, to make sure that others can be recognized in his works that do not want to be autobiographical\, but to achieve a universality of memory: \n“My memories are tools that I use for my works\, but I want to get to use the memories of others” was one of the phrases that struck me most of his artistic thought”. \nThis vision has implications that could produce interesting contaminations with the exhibition’s most impactful work\, Memory\, composed of blocks of paper tissues on whose sides the artist has screen printed the faces of his school friends taken from an old photo. Many of these faces – he tells me – because of the past time seemed alien to him: this led him to elaborate bitter considerations on the power of the image as a source of memory\, which he concretized in these portraits that are fragmented and irregular\, and there they speak of the inevitability of the disintegration of our memories\, and of the need to actively act to preserve them. \nIt will be interesting to find out if and how the artist will be able to develop this work to bring it into a universal sphere capable of creating that empathy that I have seen penetrating strongly in the emotional sphere of those who have dealt openly with his works\, and which in my opinion it represents perhaps the real strength of his research. \nFor now we just have to wait and take the opportunity to have at hand the work of an artist of this level\, who has all the potential to become – and perhaps already is – one of the names to be observed carefully in the near future .

SUMMARY:Daniele Fabiani
DESCRIPTION:The artist Daniele Fabiani was in residence at Casa Toesca from 4 to 17 November 2018\, on the occasion of the exhibition “De Natura”. \nDuring this period he carried out an installation project in the courtyard of the Rivarolo Canavese town hall. \nFrom the recovery of an old disused umbrella that moored around the external walls of his farmhouse in the mountains\, Daniele Fabiani\, with an almost Dadaist operation\, inserts this objet trouvé in a public place with the intention of inspiring the imagination of those present\, called here to interact with the wooden structure\, the organic figures and the explicit reference to the nature of the Canavese area. \nThe shafts of the umbrella are shown on polyethylene realistic plant forms that unfold like pages of an open book. These blue graphic signs must be read with the same attention that is paid to reading\, in order to allow an approach and direct interaction of the public with the artifact. \nWith this intervention\, the artist wants to define an organic relationship between the bystander and the installation through human interaction and the distorted perception of the force of gravity: are the ropes to support the work or is it the same work that supports itself? Are the contrasting forces of nature to support human architecture or vice versa? Or as\, more poetically\, Fabiani himself suggests “wood relates to the ropes like a raft now on the bone\, in a vertical balance”. \n– \nDaniele Fabiani (born 1988 in Berzo Inferiore\, Brescia) lives and works between Val Camonica and Milan. \nIn 2013 he graduated in Visual Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera\, Milan. Among his most recent exhibitions Iperuranio\, Galleria Daniele Agostini\, Lugano\, CH (2018); After the storm\, artists’ house\, Bienno\, IT (2017); Contemporary signs\, Odolfredi Castle\, Iseo\, IT (2016); Cyclope\, identités mediterranéennes\, Paris\, FR (2015); Ecoismi\, man and the ways of nature\, Isola Borromeo\, Cassano d’Adda\, IT (2015).

SUMMARY:Matej Frank
DESCRIPTION:Matej Frank is a Polish visual artist\, born in 1989; he works in Wrocław (Poland) and lives in Opava (Czech Republic).\n \nThe residences project was organised in collaboration with Associazione Barriera (Turin)\, in whose space the artist realised the performance “Entropia”.\n \nThe performance\, which began as a tribute to the “Galeria Entropia” art gallery in Wrocław\, was streamed from Associazione Barriera to the Polish gallery; the artist dedicated his work to the thirtieth year of activity of the gallery.Matej Frank realised a detailed performance to create and evocate the entropy phenomenon.\n\n\n\n\nHis working method is very simple for some aspects but at the same time it’s demanding and complex: his works\, whether they are actions\, sculptures\, paintings\, all start from the basic idea of telling a phenomenon or an experience. The artist finds the primary source of his work in the world and in its changes: he deals with space in relation with time\, movement\, body and sound.\n \nFor the performance “Entropia” Matej took inspiration from the book “A Brief History of Time” by Stephen Hawking. The reading made him think about the possibility to create a visual transposition of the entropy phenomenon\, the measure of the degree of balance achieved by a system at any given moment.\n \nIn the realisation of the work at Associazione Barriera\, the artist chose to paint 1\,500 black and white dots on the wall (a number that is not random\, but which represents the figure of each event during 30 years of the Galeria Entropia)\, deleting and replacing them from time to time\, until he get the perfect balance between the two colors.\n\n\n\n\n \nMatej began to take an interest in performance after years as a sculptor: movement in space is an excellent means for a visual artist who wants to explore new types of communication. He wants to relate with structures\, which can be open to improvisation or previously prepared\, as in this case. The artist is interested in visual language: he takes a given phenomenon and translates it for the beholder.\n \nMatej Frank’s art is his way of looking at the world\, a universal but purely subjective point of view\, which can be shared and which gives space to different interpretations: “My art can be understood on different levels\, I don’t hide the meaning of my job”.

SUMMARY:Silvia Argiolas
DESCRIPTION:During her residence\, Silvia Argiolas took us to the metabolic process of sexuality in which everything becomes pulp\, where the colors and the grafts on canvas become the same organic material\, the cloaca of images\, perfumes\, secretions\, blood\, make up\, sequins. Her aesthetic is a research on the dynamics of sexual paraphilia: throw images her leads us right in the middle of the relationship between the nature of exhibitionism and the cultural models\, through which it is conveyed. This original ambiguity is inherent in her making art. During her period of residence\, the artist confronted herself with the other artists present: Elvis Spadoni\, Giacomo Modolo and Stefania Falsone.

SUMMARY:Giacomo Modolo
DESCRIPTION:The artist Giacomo Modolo was in residence between February and March 2018. \nIt is the second time that Giacomo Modolo collaborates with Areacreativa42 for an artist residency project. This time the project was enriched by the co-presence of Elvis Spadoni\, Silvia Argiolas and Stefania Falsone. The artists discussed the issues of collaboration in the art system and the role of the artist. Giacomo Modolo started working on the cycle of “Sulle orme del lupo” which “represents a personal moment of great intimacy and pictorial research. The wolf\, present several times in my latest works\, hovers in space as a presence\, alone and in search of his lost pack. In my imagination it becomes a symbol\, becoming the emblem of a human side that I have always considered in my artistic research. Solitude and insecurity that mix with pride and ferocity\, leaving room for the beauty that hides meanness. Contradictions that populate my painting usually with cynical and dramatic human figures who\, in the footsteps of the wolf\, find their aesthetic and metaphorical manifesto.\nIn continuous contradiction also the pictorial language formed by brush strokes in constant dialogue between form and abstraction\, gesture and geometry\, as well as the continuous overlapping of brush strokes that give birth to the precarious balances on which the image and the composition stand. ” From this cycle\, a latest work was selected in the 2019 edition of the Combat Prize\, in the painting section. \n

SUMMARY:Elvis Spadoni
DESCRIPTION:Elvis Spadoni was born in Urbino in 1979. He lives and works in Santarcangelo di Romagna. \nThe artist Elvis Spadoni was in residence at Casa Toesca in Rivarolo (Turin)\, from the 10th of February to 11th of March 2018: during this period\, the visitors were invited several times to visit the atelier and participate in the workshops. \nDuring the resindence\, the artist and the members of Areacreativa42 organised the exhibition “The Space of the Sacred” in collaboration with the City of Cuorgnè. For the occasion Elvis Spadoni created a work in the former church and the public was able to follow its progress until the end. \nThe exhibition\, curated by Areacreativa42 in close dialogue with the artist\, was accompanied by workshops for the students from local schools\, focused on the practice of drawing the human figure\, a very important part of the artist’s research. \nThe works showed were part of a cycle dedicated to biblical and mythological subjects; there was a contrast between the realism that characterises the figures and the minimalism of the space inside the canvas\, permeated with an intense light. Within this artistic path\, the sacred icon coexists and dialogues with the socio-anthropological concept of myth as an act of foundation of society\, culture and the rational order of worldly things. In myth\, as well as in biblical narration\, norms and social precepts find their own origin\, covering themselves with another value. The mythical narrative is therefore a transposition\, mediated by the presence of the sacred\, of social\, ethical and moral instances proper to human nature. \n\n\n\n\n\nIn this sense\, Elvis Spadoni’s painting is mythical\, and Man is the absolute protagonist; through it the artist reflects on the human condition.\nHowever\, the protagonist of the work is the empty space\, which prevails on the canvas: it represents a silent place to which we are admitted\, an opportunity of dialogue between the observer and the work.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Elias Santis
DESCRIPTION:Elias Santis is a contemporary Argentine painter\, in residence at Casa Toesca from 13 October to 20 November 2017. \nPlease find below some abstract from the interview with the young curator Giulia Cordò. \nG: “Let’s talk about your current situation\, have you agreed to participate in this artist’s residence in a country far away and different from your home\, do you think that the foreign neighborhood does fit you?”\nE: “[…] What happened here\, apart from being so far away\, gave me time and time to be very much with myself\, because here there’s nothing\nthat distracts you\, I was able to see it in the people who surrounded me and the truth is that they are not so different compared to Santiago del Chile\, I felt in a very familiar environment\, both for those who stayed with me around\, that for the landscape and also in everyday life. ”\nG: “And has the surrounding landscape stimulated you for the painting you have done this month?”\nE: “yes\, the natural landscape\, each person dresses in a certain color\, paints their home in a certain color and they too are part of the landscape: this has stimulated me a lot\, a lot from having changed the brush stroke of my style; I think there will be a before and after in my painting after this residence\, in particular as regards the colour. ”\nG: “So can you say that you have placed stones for the future?”\nE: “It is very nice what you say because I think exactly like that\, stone by stone. […] ” \n\nElías Santis\, born in 1980 in Buenos Aires (Argentina). He studied art at the National University Institute of Art in Argentina. He has exhibited in personal exhibitions such as\, among the most important\, “Terrícolas”\, Galería Animal (Santiago de Chile\, 2010)\, “Orbita Prima”\, Mite Gallery (Buenos Aires\, 2011)\, “Lune”\, RT & W Gallery (Berlin \, 2013). He has also participated in group exhibitions such as “Circular Project”\, Palais de Glace (Buenos Aires\, 2012) “Cosmos”\, Volkerkunde Museum (Hamburg\, 2012)\, “Medial Arts Biennial”\, National Museum of Fine Arts (Santiago de Chile 2017) and “Stanze”\, Italian Institute of Culture (Santiago de Chile\, 2018). In his work he explores the abstract and invisible nature of human beings and beings in general\, by means of paintings\, which employ colours\, figures\, symbolic stories and allegories. Shadow and light\, earth and sky. Everything contains a silent meaning. \n\n\nAlcuni schizzi realizzati dall’artista durante al sua residenza.

SUMMARY:Armando De La Garza
DESCRIPTION:The Mexican artist Armando De La Garza was in residence at Casa Toesca from June 27 to July 2\, 2017. \nOn the occasion of the residency\, in addition to the open atelier and the final exhibition of the works\, Biotà (24 June – 2 July 2017) in the exhibition space on the ground floor of Casa Toesca\, there was a lecture between art and philosophy with the Turin philosopher Guido Brivio. \nThe “Biotà” project encompasses and unites two themes: the vast naturalistic imagery of Italy and Mexico and an ethical and ecological discourse on waste materials that can be transformed from garbage to works of art. The Biotà collection brings together 19 bottles of different materials: glass\, plastic\, tin and metal and demonstrates the artist’s ability to reinvent any material\, giving the limits imposed by the particular shapes of the bottles. Armando is committed to painting classic landscapes in the smallest details on commonly used products\, appropriating the works of great representatives of the history of art and reinterpreting them in a less conventional and personal way. Among the bottles used as painting supports there are containers of well-known Mexican and Italian national brands\, such as Tequila\, Mezcal\, Crodino together with important Italian liqueurs. Famous bottles\, sometimes also very expensive\, which however end up in the bins\, or sometimes even abandoned on the side of the road\, once the drink they contain has been consumed. “Do we really want garbage to replace nature?” This is the question that Armando De La Garza asks himself\, and with his works he gives a clear ecological and original answer. \nG: “What did you expect from Areacreativa42 and from this Artist Residence?”\nA: “What did I expect? I must say it exceeded my expectations; the space\, what was around me\, that is\, the city and the house itself\, emanate the classic essence of Italian art\, while being immersed in the contemporary. […] There was talk of being lucky\, I think I was really lucky to have had the opportunity to do the residence in this specific place\, because … well\, Italy is Italy\, however\, also here it could happen in a very contemporary\, minimalist space .. cold: that maybe it would have worked the same for working\, but it wouldn’t have invaded me of the essence that this house has instead. ” \nExcerpt from Giulia Cordò’s interview with Armando De La Garza\, 24 June 2017 \n  \n  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Paul Harvey
DESCRIPTION:Paul Harvey tends to document what surrounds him and the things that happen to him. There is a strong autobiographical element in the work\, but with a universality that\, he says\, enhances what he does. Sometimes he calls his paintings “painted poems” because of their charm\, and he feels a psychological connection with the work of Karel Teige\, the Czech avant-garde. Harvey speaks of Teige’s collages as exquisite combinations of female figure\, landscape and architecture. Teige himself said that “all art is nothing more than a transposition of eroticism” and “there is no theme other than the omnipotence of love” and Harvey understands it. According to Harvey\, Teige’s collages have a strong and authentic surreal element\, but they give a feeling of reality\, like nature\, in fact. He sees all these things as important aspects of his work\, particularly in the way apparently unrelated elements come together but to make sense and make sense. It could be seen as a magical realism. Mountain landscapes have appeared in his work for many years\, mainly due to a trip made in Switzerland as when he was still a schoolboy in 1973. Consequently\, when in the summer of 2017 he worked as an artist in residence at Areacreativa42\, with the Alps at ‘horizon\, said it was like working in one of his paintings. It is the type of environment that is happy to explore and romanticize\, but not at the expense of truth. During the residency period\, the artist started and created a cycle of works on the theme of Italy. The artist Paul Harvey created a cycle of works on the theme of Italy. Starting from his memories of a holiday in Savona as a child in 1967 and of his visit to Turin in October 2016. In this case the artist related to the Italian tradition as a myth\, superimposed on the gaze of the child in a foreign country. He created a cycle of paintings\, acrylic on canvas\, which were exhibited at the end of the residence. At the same time\, we studied the history of Olivetti in depth with the artist in order to propose an exhibition on the occasion of Ivrea’s candidacy for UNESCO. \nThe residence ended with the exhibition An englishman abroad (19 June – 20 August 2017).

SUMMARY:Enrico Minguzzi
DESCRIPTION:The artist Enrico Minguzzi was in the artist residence at Casa Toesca from 2 to 27 May 2017.\nDuring his residency he worked on an installation project to be located in the Municipality of Valperga on the path to the Sacro Monte di Belmonte. In this project\, the intent was to bring the geometric elements into the reality of the place. \nDuring his residence\, Enrico Minguzzi worked on an installation project to be located in Valperga on the path to the Sacro Monte di Belmonte. In this project\, the intent was to bring the geometric elements into the reality of the place. The aim of the residence was for the artist to detach himself from painting at the specific moment in order to deal with the site specific installation of a work that the artist had long wanted to achieve. With Minguzzi\, we initially proceeded to the general setting of the project\, then to the inspections with the local Administration for the identification of the areas suitable for the site specific and following a first documentation of the areas available through the photographic medium. The artist has made drafts and following the bureaucratic process the work was inaugurated a year later in the presence of the artist and the regional and municipal institutions. After a series of inspections\, the area was identified (a stretch of green area located on the left side of the road towards the sacred Monte di Belmonte) and agreements were made with the Valperga Administration which collaborated on the project. The intended area was in a strong state of neglect and was cleaned and restored. In this way the biotechnical interventions consisting of some plants placed by the Park Authority years ago to activate naturalistic and cultural tourism that the administration intends to promote in its territory have been enhanced. A phase of understanding of the technical aspects followed: choice of materials\, technical construction\, transport and assembly\, authorizations from the relevant bodies. \nThe installation project was born as a development of the pictorial work of the artist who for about six years has been carrying out research totally dedicated to nature focused on the con guration and abstraction. Hence the need to insert elements extraneous to the subject was born\, depriving him of his intrinsic balance and trying to find a new and different one. The geometries that the artist inserts in the painting before and in the installation now consist of irregular polyhedral lines played between full and empty. The result is an image or a place that presents internal contamination and suggests questions about these “presences”\, but capable of having its own rediscovered stability. The goal is not to give an answer about “what it is” or what is represented\, rather simply to reveal something that in reality is there but is not visible. The result is a steel structure that forms irregular geometric lines that integrate with the surrounding place and vegetation. The structure is painted light magenta in order to accentuate its foreign nature. The installation consists of 4 blocks in their own right\, ie detached from the others and anchored to the ground independently. \nDuring is residence there were education workshops with adults and children. \n  \nINVISIBLE\, permanent site-specific installation by Enrico Minguzzi\, created thanks to the contribution of Areacreativa42 and the Municipality of Valperga (with the patronage of the Piedmont Region) was inaugurated on April 8\, 2018.

SUMMARY:Zuzana Pernicova
DESCRIPTION:Zuzana Pernicova was in the artist residence at Areacreativa42 twice: September – November 2016  and January – March 2017. \nThe most important moment of her residence was during the performance “The paper houses” (12 February 2017)\, organizsd during the residence in collaboration with the young curator Martina Furno. \nLINK TO THE CATALOG \n  \n  \nI knew the work of Zuzana Pernikova in the occasion of the third edition of the Carlo Bonatto Minella Prize – Art Prize CBM. The jury liked her work and she was selected among the finalists. At that time\, the artist was committed to deepening the themes of solitude and incommunicability. I immediately thought that the experience of the artist residence at Casa Toesca could have been supportive in Zuzana’s artistic career and we agreed on a program of “week-ends artist residence”. Zuzana has prepared an installation and a performance project with the curator Martina Furno and they developed “The paper houses” involving some members of Areacreativa42 and other artists. During her stay we organized meetings with schools\, children and adults\, and also drawing workshops. The activity\, partially documented in this notebook\, has had the consensus we expected: I am convinced that it was of great help to the artist and will remain a very significant experience for those who were able to live it with us. As in any artist residence in Casa Toesca\, the artist arrives with his own knowledge and experience\, immerses himself in the ancient atmosphere\, explores the territory and compares himself with young curators\, students and with us from Areacreativa42. And the journey into the world of art continues. \nKarin Reisovà \n  \n\n\n\n“Loneliness is never with you; it is always without you\, and only possible with a stranger around: place or person who is\, who completely ignores you\, so that your will and your feeling remain suspended and lost in a anguished uncertainty and\, ceasing all affirmation of you\, cease the very intimacy of your conscience. True loneliness is in a place that lives for itself and that has no trace or voice for you\, and where therefore the stranger is you “. \nZuzana Pernicova is an artist with a calm and curious character. For years\, she has been collecting stories of loneliness\, absences and misunderstandings in her diaries. She observes the reality with attentive and discreet eyes\, without presumption or judgment: between these pages real stories have been stratified\, in the form of sketches and collages\, where the graphic medium\, frank and uncontaminated by definition\, has revealed itself in all its expressive power\, capable of collecting – with tacit violence – fragments of life. The humanity that populates these stories is\, in fact\, introverted\, fearful\, lonely\, too often unable to communicate with the outside world. In quantum physics there is a scientific explanation for this discomfort: two entities cannot coexist simultaneously in the same space\, at the same time and in the same energy level. If this were the case\, even in the performance “The paper houses”\, each person would have had to exist in a different space\, at a different time and on an empathic level different from the others. But what science cannot bend\, and which Zuzana has chosen as the object of investigation\, is the sudden and fortuitous figure. \nThe participants\, of different ages\, were invited to enter into paper cylinders of different sizes\, which together wanted to recreate the idea of a wooded environment: each person was thus entrusted with a “tree house”\, each existing in itself\, but part of a unitary whole. There is only one rule to respect: silence. Scissors and charcoal in hand\, everyone started to follow their instincts and perceptions by designing and carving their home at will. Initially\, everyone sought comfort in their own space: Bedouin tents\, castles\, submarines\, rooms covered with spaceships\, sea monsters and childhood games were born. The sound data\, emitted by the rubbing of the charcoal on the paper surface and by the rattling of the scissors\, has acquired increasing intensity\, up to the point of “breaking”: the unexpected. This is how enterprising people sought an opening: a window to breathe\, a tear to let the light in\, a porthole to deliver messages. Someone threw some paper balls carefully\, waiting for a reaction. Another\, with a daring and indiscreet move\, escaped from his own cylinder\, tearing it open with a liberating gesture\, and then insinuating himself into that of others\, without fear of being rejected. As in any society\, the disturbing element has received only partial acceptance\, but has had the time and the courage to set in motion a mechanism of “revolt”\, to generate chaos. And it was precisely in the disorder that something took shape: the relationships\, silently woven like underground roots\, created a visible map\, a tortuous and tangled track\, of which only fragments of paper remain and a feeling in the air that smells good. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMartina Furno

SUMMARY:Giacomo Montanelli
DESCRIPTION:Giacomo Montanelli (1996 Florence) is a very young Tuscan artist known thanks to his selection as Under30 finalist of the III edition of Art Prize CBM Turin Prague London. His work\, a very small painting on paper\, was exhibited in Rivarolo and London at the Christine Park Gallery\, indicating the strong interest that the artist had aroused in the international jury of the Prize. \nThe project for the residence was prepared in the spring and\, given Giacomo’s young age\, he had to wait until his school diploma in July for the first phase of work. The experience of residency in this case started from the external environment\, from the territory of Rivarolo Canavese and in particular from the places “denied”\, “Inaccessible”\, “absent” because abandoned: the industrial buildings of the two large factories in Rivarolo (Salp and Vallesusa) and the bank of the Orco river.\nThe artist interpreted these places according to his sensitivity and poured it into an experience of painting\, painting on photography and installation. The place of the residence has become the container to tell the outside and later to tell himself. \nAfter completing the first part of the residence\, the artist was again hosted at Casa Toesca in October to prepare a personal exhibition documenting his first steps as a young artist in the art world. \n“Now”\, the first solo exhibition by Giacomo Montanelli\, was inaugurated on Saturday 8 October 2016 Areacreativa42. \nLINK TO THE CATALOG

SUMMARY:Clementine Carsberg
DESCRIPTION:Marseilles artist Clementine Carsberg was in residence between November 2014 and March 2015. Her residence was marked by the meeting and the dialectical relationship with the photographer Carmen Cardillo: two languages\, cultural contexts and rules in dialogue. \nLINK TO THE CATALOG \nCarmen Cardillo’s photographic exhibition in Catania concludes the Secret de famille project\, artist’s residence at Clémentine Carsberg’s Casa Toesca. The Marseilles artist meditated on the issues of the passage of time and memory\, in search of the traces of those who inhabited the ancient estate\, and who currently inhabit it\, taking advantage of the space of the lemon house. In November 2014\, in the period in which Turin annually dedicates maximum visibility to contemporary art with Artissima\, Areacreativa42 had opened the rooms of Casa Toesca for a double appointment entirely for women. Clémentine had inaugurated the installation in the space of the “small house limonaia”\, while Carmen on the first floor had her personal photography exhibition. Her focus was on the work “Secret de famille” that after Areacreativa42 was exhibited at the Multipurpose Cultural Center of the Palazzo della Culture of Catania. Acute observer and lover of what she calls the “archaeological traces” herself\, Clémentine drew inspiration from a room on the second floor of Casa Toesca\, the “attic”\, for the realization of an installation in papier peint. The wallpaper\, a distinctive feature of its production\, is the material that best combines with the meditation conducted on the signs of time that run through the house\, an operation that is summarized in the title of the residence. Discrete tracks\, just suggested that are loaded with universal meanings\, without telling a too precise story. Clémentine offers us a new interpretation of space: papier peint\, a humble and everyday material\, has the potential to hide the visible and confuse the viewer. Carmen’s discreet and silent presence\, her observations and sensitivity were of fundamental importance and contributing to the development of the project. Her photographs are intended to restore that sense of initial discovery\, of revelation born in the encounter with the attic. I am excited about this project\, the artistic process that involved us\, coordinated by Martina Furno\, a young art historian. The artist’s residence in this case was a complete immersion in work\, without distractions and\, when Carmen arrived\, she also shared a total time of the project for her. The photographic exhibition and the catalog tell us of the suspended climate\, the fascinating discovery of an ancient place\, the tension of the creative moment and the amazement of decontextualization; the project has no boundaries and this is the true meaning of this profound and fascinating experience. \nKarin Reisovà \n  \nI was reading a thriller\, like during my first stay at Casa Toesca\, when I made a parallel and I smiled: looking for a “good” idea of a work of art\, designed for a specific place\, comes close to solving a puzzle.\nThe enigma of the work suited to this place – as if you were to discover something existing for this particular place. A treasure hunt in collecting photographs\, stories and anecdotes of the place\, preferences\, obstacles\, amusements …\nThe Limonaia is not an easy space: exposed directly on the garden\, with the dark tiles that also cover the benches masonry and warm lighting from the lights on the ceiling. But every place is a place in its own way and I like to accept the challenge of creating something specifically designed for a space and its peculiarities. What surprises me every time is a contradictory feeling. When I offered myself\, as on this occasion\, a space\, a time and trust – a great freedom of action to achieve what I want – on the one hand a reassuring wind of motivation carries me and pushes me; on the other\, a paralysis presents itself in front of these infinite possibilities of realizable works\, which I should channel in my incubator to reveal what seems appropriate to the event\, at the moment\, to the space. Appropriate in and of itself.\nFind a comfortable position\, in balance between this void and this full … \nClementine Carsberg
