Alias / Self-portraits
curated by Carmelo Nicosia and Karin Reisovà
5 – 30 November 2014
During the period when Turin dedicated to contemporary art with the great visibility of Artissima (7-9 November 2014), Areacreativa42 also opens the doors of Casa Toesca for a double date all in pink. Wednesday, November 5 Clémentine Carsberg, the artist involved in the “Artist Residences”, will conclude her stay in town with the inauguration of its installation in the “limonaia” space; at the same time the exhibition on the first floor of the photographer Carmen Cardillo will open.
Casa Toesca dedicated to the catanese photographer Carmen Cardillo its exhibition halls on the first floor. The title “Alias / Self-portraits” anticipates the theme of the selfie, to which the photographer has dedicated herself in her latest research. The beginnings of the collaboration with Carmen dates back to 2012 with the show “Sicily … Stop!” at Villa Vallero (Rivarolo C.se), where some of her works were exhibited alongside those of Oriana Tabacco and Carmelo Nicosia, his master, who so defined it: “Carmen Cardillo is the daughter of the avant-garde, the daughter of the discipline and good reading […] perpetually poised between reason and feelings, generous”. Her calculations are intimate, “photographic anime” sketches from the imperfect form of mason hats, elongated homes, paper airplanes. Other fragments are: it is her face, her identity, which composes and decomposes, which takes many forms, existences. The photographs of Carmen go outside to meet, to tell: “selfies aware that you remain inside, as opposed to the noise,” says Karin Reisovà.
Clémentine and Carmen, two women full of questions: a careful encounter with the environment, with the traces of history, the other engaged in the research of an inner sense.
Thanks to the collaboration of teachers and of the young Department of Culture of the city, on the day of Wednesday November the 5th, CasaToesca will be open from the morning already to accommodate the children of local schools, involving them in workshops of photography and collage together with the two artists. The day will conclude with the vernissage of the exhibition starting at 18.
